There is little that can be said about Stasys Eidrigevicius that
has not already been written. Stasys, as he is almost universally
known, is perhaps the most widely recognized figure in Polish art
today. Although Lithuanian by birth and education he graduated
from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vilnius in 1973, he is claimed by
Poland as its own. He has lived and worked in Warsaw since 1980.
Noted Polish writer, newspaper editor and decorated patriot Jerzy
Turowicz notes that "for Polish art, the Lithuanian Stasys is what
the Spaniard Picasso, the Italian Modigliani, or the Russian Jews
Chagall, Zadkine and Soutine were for the Paris School."
Stasys is known most widely for his poster art, which has
attracted international recognition and numerous awards. His
faces masks, really convey a full range of human emotion and
predicament, almost exclusively through their ubiquitous
button-eyes. Perhaps it is our ability to relate to his figures by
looking through these windows to their souls that explains
Stasys's international appeal. In his 30 year career, Stasys has
had more than 60 solo exhibitions in more than 20 countries. His
works hang in the National Museum of Poland in Warsaw, Wroclaw and Poznan, in the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius, Lithuania, and
in numerous other museums in France, Switzerland, Germany, The
Netherlands, England, Denmark, Japan, the U.S. and several other
nations. He is the winner of many prestigious awards and the
subject of several retrospectives. He has executed numerous
commissioned works and performances in Poland, Japan, France, the
US, Lithuania, Italy, Israel and Australia and is the subject of
numerous books and films in Polish, English and other languages.
