Although the youngest artist in this
exhibition, Mr. Huculak has already had several solo exhibitions
in Poland. More interesting than his past work, however, is
what appears to be a very bright future. His still life
gouaches and his landscapes appear to have been produced by an
artist with many more years of wisdom than Mr. Huculak could yet
have attained. His work seems rooted in the past. The
objects and scenes in them are timeless. They could have
been produced last week or a hundred years ago. Yet they are
undeniably modern. They remind us of early photography,
fuzzy in the details but communicating clearly nonetheless owing
to the eye's ability to understand the binary messages transmitted
by
reflected and absorbed light. There is depth in his flat
finishes. We can almost see the hidden sides of his objects.
We hear sound in his landscapes. We sense we are witness to
the early stages of a remarkable career.
